Fire Alarm Installation & Testing Tips
- Ideally working smoke detectors should be installed on each floor of your building, outside the bedrooms, at the top of the open stairs, and at the base of the cellar stairs.
- Smoke detectors are only helpful if they are maintained. Once a month, have them tested.
- If the alarm uses regular batteries, adjust them at least once a year. A simple way to recall this is to replace the batteries when adjusting your clocks. The “chirping” sound means it’s time to adjust the batteries and test them.
- Smoke detectors are to be replaced every 10 years. Alarms are numbered with their date of manufacture. If no mark exists, consider them to be older than 10 years and should therefore be replaced.
